Bed bugs hide in tiny cracks and crevices and usually visit their host for a brief feed in the few hours just before dawn. To an expert pest controller, signs of bed bugs are easy to spot. But to the untrained and inexperienced eye identifying bed bugs is a little harder. Here are a few of the common signs that there may be bed bugs in one of your rooms. Sweet scent - an unpleasant, sweet, sickly scent. Small dark spots - small dark blood spots on bedding known as 'faecal pellets. Dark/black stains - on the mattress and surrounding area from bed bug excreta. Live insects - despite being small (adults are only 4-5mm long) it’s possible to spot live bed bugs and shed skins. Blood spots - on the sheets or mattress. Information and Procedures Clutter is the bedbug’s best friend and must be eliminated. The main clue to infestation is the evidence of small red to reddish-brown faecal spots clustered on surfaces near harbourage areas, bedbug moult skins and heavy infestations, an obnoxiously sweet bedbug odour will be detected. Control Great care must be taken to treat the mattress, box springs, upholstery and the bedding itself. All bedding must be washed in an EXTREMELY HOT washing cycle. A residual contact insecticide will be used together with a total release EXTREME Fogger to eradicate bedbugs. The Mattress MUST be removed after treatment and placed in the sun for a minimum of 4 hours after which it needs to be VACUUMED to EXTRACT all the dead bugs or you will have a flare-up again. We use an XTREAM FOGGER treatment at R350 per room. No need to Unpack just make sure all cupboard doors are closed and all food is sealed or if open put it in a container. And EVERYONE would need to vacate the home for 6 hours and then to be VACUUMED thoroughly for ALL DEAD INSECTS not to attract more and because if a child or animal should swallow it, it can be Fatal.
